Nick Ozment, as an American fairy-tale writer and critic, recognizes his own place in the lineage and influence of Baum. A popular speaker and panelist at conferences and conventions, including the World Fantasy Convention, Ozment has also taught courses on fantasy and horror literature at Winona State University in Winona, MN. He is a regular blogger for the online magazine Black Gate.

L. Frank Baum, who wrote hundreds of books, short stories, poems, and scripts, is best known for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. Writer and critic Nick Ozment will deliver a presentation about how Baum’s world-renowned
stories were shaped by his home country and how, in turn, they have influenced fantasy and children’s books. Although Baum was working in a well-established tradition of European fairy tales, what he gave us in the world of Oz was a fairy tale with American roots steeped in New World soil.
